Radio observations of stellar winds from early type stars

چکیده
FifteenO andB supergiants have been observedwith the Very Large Array (VLA) at 4.85, 8.45, and 14.95 GHz in order to make a detailed comparative study of the mass loss rates evaluated from Hα and radio continuum observations and reveal and quantify possible departures from standardwind conditions. We detected 12 sources, 7 of which for the first time, thus increasing by 30% the total number of detections of OB supergiants in the northern sky. Radio spectral slopes indicate that the radio emission is mainly of thermal origin in all objects with one exception (HD 190603) out of the 12 detections. Our results demonstrate the value of using Hα for mass loss rate determinations, especially for stars that are too distant or too faint to be detectedwith radio techniques. The relationship Ṁ−L for supergiants turns out to be appreciably flatter than commonly reported, i.e. log Ṁ = (1.25± 0.30) logL.

Radio observations of colliding winds in massive stars
This brief review describes radio observations of colliding winds in massive stars starting with the first direct observational support for the colliding-wind model advanced in the early 1990’s to explain non-thermal radio and thermal X-ray emission in some massive stars. Studies of the well-studied and highly-eccentric WR+O star systemWR140 are described along with recent observations of O-sta...
متن کاملInteracting Winds in Massive Binaries
Massive stars feature highly energetic stellar winds that interact whenever two such stars are bound in a binary system. The signatures of these interactions are nowadays found over a wide range of wavelengths, including the radio domain, the optical band, as well as X-rays and even γ-rays. A proper understanding of these effects is thus important to derive the fundamental parameters of the com...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملProperties of Hot , Massive Stars : The Impact of FUSE Paul
The impact of FUSE upon the fundamental parameters of OB stars and Wolf-Rayet stars is reviewed. The stellar wind signatures available in the far-UV provide us with important additional diagnostics of effective temperature. Together with improved non-LTE stellar atmosphere models allowing for line blanketing and stellar winds, this has led to a downward revision in the spectral type-temperature...
متن کاملThe ultraviolet and optical spectra of luminous B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of 12 early B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), comprising 9 supergiants and 3 giants. A morphological comparison with Galactic analogues is made using archival data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). In general, the intensity of the P Cygni emission in the UV resonance lines is gre...
